As of today, the Lakers are 12-2 at home, the majority of their losses have come on the road. That is what made this 6 game road trip a little more interesting. This would be a chance for the Lakers to shed the road woe's. On this trip the Lakers would play: Denver, Utah, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, and Toronto.
How did the Lakers measure up? Well they finished the road trip 3-3, with wins against: Denver, Boston, and Toronto. The Denver win, and the OT win against Boston were quite impressive, but the Toronto win and the 3 losses showed some already well known weaknesses from the Laker squad.
Lou Williams drains a 3 to go up against the Lakers Night |
The Lakers lost a 3rd quarter lead to Utah, along with Mike Brown being ejected, which ultimately led to them blowing the game and losing it in the 4th. The same thing happened with Philly, had a pretty consistent lead all game until they allowed Lou Williams to score 7 straight in the fourth to come through with a win; as well as ruin a night where Kobe passed Shaq for 5th on the all time scoring list. The loss to the Knicks caused all sorts of "Lin-Sanity", in a game in which the lakers seemed to have no chance. Oh and in case you didn't know already, Jeremy Lin dropped 38 and 7 on them!
Jeremy Lin Drives the Lane, finishing the night with 38 pts |
What do these 3 losses, and the Laker win vs Toronto have in Common? Well the Lakers in all four of those games blew leads, but most importantly, they absolutely could not stop point guard productions from the other team. Earl Watson...yes folks...EARL WATSON...went for 8 points and 11 assist (he hit some crucial buckets towards the end of the 4th). Jeremy Lin drops 38 points (career high) and 7 assist on the Lakers; making it look easy. Jose Calderon Drops 30 points (career high) and 6 assist. The Lakers just can't seem to stop point guards! That is the key to getting going against the Lakers.
The Lakers need a more stable point guard. Doesn't have to be a superstar lock down defender, but needs to be quick enough to stay in front of his man. As well, he needs to be able to create a shot off the dribble, as well as be a threat driving the lane. Once the Lakers get that it will make the flow of their offense a lot smoother. It will also take some of the work load off of Kobe. Now I'm not one of those guys who's saying get rid of Fish and all that other stuff. I respect what he does, and that is hit big shots and make clutch plays. For the majority of the game though, id rather see a younger more consistent guard out there.
